Customized Error Messages are an important part of any website. They offer users confidence that their internet connection has not failed, and that they remain on the right website, even if the page that they originally sought is not currently available. Thus, customized error messages add a level of professionalism to any website.

Microsoft’s Internet Information Services permits administrators to customize error messages, so that visitors don’t stare blankly at a 404 error message.

For IIS, the error pages sit in C:\WINDOWS\Help\iisHelp\Common. (You can likely find it on most machines since until Windows 2003, IIS was installed by default on Windows XP and Windows 2000 workstations.) For each error message, there is an .htm file are labeled according to the type of errors.
